- PublicationMetadata onlyA study of the “Auxiliary Texts of the ‘Book of Changes’” [“Yiwei”](ProQuest Dissertations Publishing, 2000)Neo, Peng FuThe Yiwei are component of the corpus of literature called chenwei, or weishu, which originated in Han Dynasty China (206 B.C.–220 A.D.) and have generally been referred to as the “Apocryphal” or “apocrypha and prognostication writings” in Western sinological works. This dissertation suggests that the chenwei be rendered as the “auxiliary texts of the Confucian classics.” The Yiwei therefore are the “Auxiliary Texts of the Book of Changes,” a set of writings meant to complement the Yijing. This dissertation accounts on the transmission of the Yiwei and outlines their major contents. Its focus of analysis, however, is on a particular concern of the writings: the attempt to correlate the Yijing with the calendar. The endeavor to establish symbolic correlation between the Yijing and the calendar is mainly accomplished by the creation of certainmodels of correlative scheme that delineate the supposed correspondences between the components of the Yijing and the units of the calendar. Much of these correlative schemes embodied in the Yiwei have been recognized as closely related with the teachings of two prominent Yijing masters active during the mid-Former Han, Meng Xi and Jing Fang. Hence, it is generally believed that the Yiwei were mainly composed by the followers of the two masters and were sources exemplifying this particular school of Yijing learning. This study, however, attempts to identify within the passages of Yiwei certain ideas or concepts which possibly originated before the time of Meng Xi and Jing Fang. It argues that these ideas represented the thought of early Han Yijing scholars and were a reflection of their effort of responding to the major intellectual currents of their time. This dissertation, therefore, proposes that one should not be bounded by the tradition of seeing the Yiwei as primarily derived from the teachings of Meng Xi and Jing Fang, but should see it instead as a repository of the concepts or ideas evolved within Yijing studies through the span of time ranging from the post-Yizhuan (Appendices of the Book of Changes) to the mid-Former Han.

This paper discusses the history of Tamil Education and the training opportunities given to Tamil Teachers. The educational qualification of Tamil teachers and the pre- and inservice training they receive are significant. While NIE conducts training, it has certain expectations of its trainees. This paper analyses how far teachers’ capacity to acquire knowledge regarding language can be developed. Teachers need to have metalinguistic awareness of how language is learned and the ability to design context-sensitive programmes in language education. Understanding language use, language acquisition and developing an inner sense regarding language help the teacher to be better equipped as a speaker of Standard Spoken Tamil who is also skilled in Written Tamil, a specialist in pedagogy, a researcher as well as a critic. In language teacher education, it is important to empower students through their knowledge about the language and their proficiency in the language they want to improve on (John E Joseph, 2002). Such an awareness is crucial to the Tamil language education sector in Singapore.

39 - PublicationOpen AccessTransforming teacher education: Redefined professionals for 21st century schools(National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, 2008)

The book is divided into three parts, the first part is the modern novel review, the second part is the modern prose review, and the third part is the cultural art review. From the perspective of literary extension, the author explores style, inspiration and literary phenomena with a strong sense of intuition and from an “alternative and special” angle.
From the perspective of literary connotation, the special alternative content of alienation is also the main object of discussion; from the perspective of literary chronology, the anti-Japanese wars and Kuomintang-Communist co-operations and civil wars in the 1930s, to the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, to the mainlanders who retreated to Taiwan from the mainland between the 1940s to 1980s, to the Taipei movies of the 1990s, and to the "New Three People's Principles" of Singapore in the 21st century, the author picked stories of ordinary people that happened in such a time of dramatic changes, as his subjects of criticism, has its own "special alternative" vision.
The author uses a large number of aesthetic theories to interpret life and death from Freud's subconscious mind, to aesthetic master Bock's "distance theory", to Kant's "completeness" and then to the existential master Heidegger's "boarder situation". The author selects the alternatives in the masterpieces from a special perspective to interpret the mystery in the imagery, measures and construct the literary atmosphere.
He combines aesthetics with morality, historical insights with worldly life, and presents his own literary life and philosophy of life. Review itself is poetics. The author's arguments are "unexpected", but the discussions are "expected". His Chinese experience and his time studying in Europe will all bring the readers to a live journey in understanding literary aesthetics.
