    Using ICT in teaching the Chinese language: Practices and reflections from Singapore
    (Springer, 2016) ;
    Liu, May

    The twenty-first century is the era of communication and knowledge construction, so information communications technology (ICT) literacy has become a critical twenty-first-century skill that enables students to engage in computer-assisted language learning (CALL). This chapter discusses current ICT practices in the teaching of the Chinese language in Singapore. These practices include integrating ICT into Chinese language curriculum goals and assessments, classroom teaching and student learning. Localised ICT platforms used in teaching and learning, such as iMTL and 10C, will be briefly introduced. We will then reflect on the use of ICT in Chinese language teaching in Singapore and suggest its possible future direction. Finally, this paper proposes a new term, authentic learning with ICT (ALICT), that refers to the use of real-life situations and contexts for immersive learning in an ICT-assisted environment.

    二十一世纪是沟通和知识建构的时代,因此信息通信技术(ICT)已成为二十一世纪需要掌握的一项关键技能。这项技使学生能够参与由计算机辅助的语言学习(CALL)。 本章讨论了目前新加坡汉语教学中的信息通信技术实践。 这些实践包括将ICT 融入中文课程目标和评估,课堂教学和学生学习。 本文介绍本地化ICT 平台,如iMTL 和10C。 我们将反思ICT 在新加坡汉语教学中的应用,并提出未来可能的发展方向。 最后,本文提出了一个新术语,即ICT 真实学习(ALICT),它指的是在信息通信技术辅助环境中使用现实生活情境和背景进行沉浸式学习。

    出人意料, 入文艺中-文学艺术中的另类现象学
    (八方文化创作室, 2009)

    The book is divided into three parts, the first part is the modern novel review, the second part is the modern prose review, and the third part is the cultural art review. From the perspective of literary extension, the author explores style, inspiration and literary phenomena with a strong sense of intuition and from an “alternative and special” angle.

    From the perspective of literary connotation, the special alternative content of alienation is also the main object of discussion; from the perspective of literary chronology, the anti-Japanese wars and Kuomintang-Communist co-operations and civil wars in the 1930s, to the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, to the mainlanders who retreated to Taiwan from the mainland between the 1940s to 1980s, to the Taipei movies of the 1990s, and to the "New Three People's Principles" of Singapore in the 21st century, the author picked stories of ordinary people that happened in such a time of dramatic changes, as his subjects of criticism, has its own "special alternative" vision.

    The author uses a large number of aesthetic theories to interpret life and death from Freud's subconscious mind, to aesthetic master Bock's "distance theory", to Kant's "completeness" and then to the existential master Heidegger's "boarder situation". The author selects the alternatives in the masterpieces from a special perspective to interpret the mystery in the imagery, measures and construct the literary atmosphere.

    He combines aesthetics with morality, historical insights with worldly life, and presents his own literary life and philosophy of life. Review itself is poetics. The author's arguments are "unexpected", but the discussions are "expected". His Chinese experience and his time studying in Europe will all bring the readers to a live journey in understanding literary aesthetics.

    本书分为三个部分,第一部分是现代小说评论,第二部分是现代散文评论,第三部分是文化艺术评论。 从文学外延来看,作者带着强烈的直觉意识从“另类” 的角度来探讨文体、启发与文学现象; 从文学内涵来看,异化的另类内容也是主要的探讨对象;从文学年表来看,从三十年代的抗日与国共背景,到六十年代的文革,以及从大陆退守台湾的外省人,到九十年代的台北电影,再到二十一世纪新加坡的“新三民主义”,作者从大时代中拣选小故事,作为评论对象,自有其“另类”的眼光。

    作者运用大量的美学理论,从弗洛伊德的潜意识,美学大师博克的“距离说”到康德的“完满”再到存在主义大师海德格的“极限境况”来诠释生与死。作者以独特的眼光选评大师级作品里的另类,意象里的玄机,并测量文学氛围的温度和营造手法。

    他结合美学与道德观照,揉合历史识见、与世俗生命,呈显自己的文学生活与人生哲学,评论本身就是诗学。 作者的论点“出人意料”,论述却是“入人意中”, 他的中国经验与留学欧洲,都将成为一部部亲临现场的文艺美学。

    Home literacy environment and its Influence on Singaporean children's Chinese oral and written language abilities
    (Springer, 2016)
    Li, Li
    ;

    In a bilingual environment such as the Singaporean Chinese community, the challenge of maintaining Chinese language and sustaining Chinese culture lies in promoting the daily use of Chinese language in oral and written forms among children. Ample evidence showed the effect of the home language and literacy environment (HLE), on children’s language and literacy abilities. This study examined Singaporean Chinese–English bilingual children’s HLE and its influence on their Chinese oral and written language ability. Parents of seventy-six Chinese–English bilingual preschoolers completed a HLE survey. Children’s Chinese oral and written language abilities were measured with age-appropriate tasks. Results of the HLE survey revealed that, on the average, children’s Chinese language and literacy related activities, either carried out independently or with parents, were not frequent, but correlated significantly with children’s oral and written language ability. A set of regression analysis showed that, after controlling for family socioeconomic status (SES), children’s language preference at home made a unique contribution, both to their Chinese language and literacy related activities and to their Chinese oral language ability. Similarly, children’s Chinese language and literacy related activities were found to make unique contribution to their Chinese written language ability after the effect of family SES and language preference was accounted for, emphasizing the crucial aspects of home literacy activities for developing children’s Chinese written language ability.

    双语环境给新加坡华人社群带来的挑战是如何推广华语成为儿童的日常用语,以便保存华语和华族文化。充分的证据显示家庭语言和知识水平环境对于儿童的语言和识字能力是有影响的,而这项研究就针对新加坡英汉双语儿童的家庭环境来探讨它如何影响儿童华语口头与书写能力。这研究包括使用适龄测试来衡量76名学龄前儿童的口头和书写能力,并让他们的家长填写一份关于他们家庭语言和知识水平环境的问卷。问卷成绩显示语言和识字相关的活动虽然在家中不是很频繁,但对儿童的语言和识字能力有相对的影响。一组回归分析显示:在对照家庭社会经济地位后,儿童在家中的语言偏好促成他们语言和识字相关的活动以及华语口头能力。

    中学华文创意写作教学研究——以新加坡特选中学中一学生为例
    (NTU-SCCL Press, 2015)
    Puah, Lynn Dee
    ;

    The teaching of Chinese composition writing in Singapore is long influenced by examination format, which has led to a lack of creativity in the students’ writings. The Singapore Centre for Chinese Language initiated a one-year school-based pilot research in creative composition writing with a group of higher Chinese (HCL) students from a top independent and Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school. This design study is based on the theoretical framework of creative thinking and Selfdirected learning (SDL). The teaching and learning of creative composition writing are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively with pre-/post-tests, and verified by triangulation of questionnaires, interviews and observations. Teaching materials are authentic and are based on topics closely related to the students’ daily life. The designs of the pedagogical activities within and beyond the classroom are highly innovative and diverse. Meanwhile, a blog was also set up to provide students with a platform catering to creative input, output and exchange. The results of this study show that the teaching of creative writing helps to reduce the rigidity of the students’ writing, and enhances their writing interest and quality. The positive findings of this research show that there is great potential for it to be further promoted.

    新加坡華文寫作教學長期受到考試命題作文“指揮棒式”的影響而成為格式化的寫作,缺乏創意。有鑑於此,新加坡華文教研中心於 2011 年展開為期一年的先導性校本研究,針對一所特選中學裡的一班高級華文學生,進行創意寫作教學試驗。本研究屬設計型研究,以創造性思維和自主性學習為理論框架,配以前、後測的量化和質化分析,並以問卷、訪談和觀察作為三角驗證。教學材料則選擇以貼近學生生活的主題和真實性語料(authentic material)為主,設計相應的課堂教學和課後自學活動,以創新、多元為準則。同時設立博客,提供學生創作及同儕交流機會。研究發現創意寫作教學除了能改進學生作文“格式化”的缺失,更能提高學生的興趣與作文質量,大有加以推廣的潛能。

    Constructing A system of irregularities: The poetry of Bei Dao, Yang Lian and Duoduo
    (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2016)

    This book investigates the poetics of three of the most internationally contemporary Chinese poets – Bei Dao, Yang Lian, and Duoduo – who were all exiled from China after the 1989 Tiananmen student movement. Their poetry was later to be labeled ‘Misty Poem’ (Menglongshi). This book examines three aspects of the ‘Mistiness’ of the poets’ oeuvre: the socio-historic background where Misty poets live and write; imagery; and linguistic elements. After first identifying the roots of Mistiness, this book identifies imagistic and linguistic clues in order to construct a hermeneutical system that examines the irregularities of the Misty poetics and appreciates the polysemy of the poets’ works. The poem’s evocativeness is unveiled, and the irregularity of the poetry’s Mistiness is established as its most powerful linguistic and imagistic aspect. The book then places the three poets' different misty characteristics into contrast: Bei Deo’s twisted imagery and elliptical syntax, Yang’s imagery in a classically-inspired syntax, and Duoduo’s integration of images into a rhythmic syntax.

    本书以三位国际知名的中国诗人北岛,杨炼以及多多的作品集为研究对象。这三位诗人均于1989 年天安门事件后流落异国, 其诗作后被称为“朦胧诗”。本书从三个角度考察他们的作品中的“模糊性”, 这三个角度分别是:朦胧诗人生活以及写作的社会历史背景;意象;以及语言要素。本书首先识别出模糊性的根源,然后辨别意向及语言中的线索,从而构造出可用来赏析朦胧诗作中的不规则现象以及一词多义现象的注释系统。回忆在诗作中被唤醒,朦胧中蕴含的不规则性被塑造,成为诗作中最有力的语言与意向角度。这本书随之将三位诗人不同的朦胧特点加以比对:北岛诗作中扭曲的意向和简略的句法,杨炼诗作中启迪于经典的意向和句法,以及多多诗作中意向与韵律句法的结合。
