Abstract
What is listening and how can it be taught? This article attempts to answer the questions by inviting language teachers to reflect on the characteristics of foreign language (FL) / second language (L2) listening and how listening can be taught and learnt effectively. Part 1 explains what teachers need to know about the listening comprehension process in order to better understand what their students need to learn to comprehend what they hear. Part 2 offers suggestions on how to teach listening in ways that are personally meaningful for learners and helpful for their listening performance.
