Abstract
In this chapter, ethnographic methods are used to illustrate some of the dynamic relationships involved in the transmission and development of literacy practices in a Malay family in Singapore. Interactions between parents, between parents and the children, and between the home and the school all contribute to the nature of reading and writing practices in the home. The picture that emerges adds to the literature on the effects of children’s home language experience on their school performance. This chapter also documents the influence from the opposite direction, that is, the impact of school literacy practices on what happens in the home. While school-type literacy practices are usually typical of middle-class homes including that of Malay families, in the family reported in this chapter, school experience is mediated in particular ways by parents’ personal histories, religion, occupation, and by the experience of the older siblings.
