Abstract
The research is an exploratory study to investigate the attitudes towards computers among Singapore primary school pupils. Firstly, the study aims to investigate the relationship between primary pupils' attitudes towards computers and computer experience and, secondly, to explore the implications of the use of IT to teachers, the administrators in schools and the Ministry of Education. The attitudes towards computers were investigated through five dimensions of fun, usefulness, ease of use, affection and confidence. For computer experience, the variables such as computer ownership, computer usage and pupils' academic ability and gender were studied. The entire sample of 500 pupils from Primary Five and Primary Six in the sample school participated in the study. The findings showed that pupils who have computers at home have more positive attitudes towards computers. Pupils who have greater computer usage have more confidence and less anxiety when using computers. The higher ability pupils showed a significant positive attitude towards computers and they generally found that computers were easy to use and had less anxiety when using them. The lower ability pupils generally lacked the confidence to use computers and perceived them as difficult to use. The present study showed that generally boys enjoyed using computers and perceived them as fun. Boys also tend to have greater confidence in using computers compared to girls.
