Abstract

In response to the increasing demand for higher education for Chinese Secondary schools’ graduates in Singapore and Malaya, Mr Tan Lark Sye proposed for the second time on 16 January 1953 the foundation of a Chinese University. His proposal was warmly accepted by the public and Nanyang University was established.
As it was formed in an era of political instability, the initial stage for the creation of Nanyang University faced many challenges and obstacles. The most critical issue during this period was the lack of capital; massive amounts were needed and there was no funding from the British Malaya Government. With the support of people from all walks of life, donations started to pour in. The establishment of Nanyang University was funded mostly by public donations, and the University was able to conduct its first lesson in 1955.
This dissertation will explore how the Chinese played an active role in realizing the dream of establishing the first and only overseas Chinese University of that time through raising funds via the Sin Chew Newspaper (1954). The Sin Chew Newspaper was a driving factor behind the birth of the university. This study will also trace how the Newspaper contributed to the fund-raising during the year of 1954.
