Abstract
The commemoration of 200 years of British legacy on Singapore’s shores provides an ideal opportunity for reflection as it is important that we look into the past in order to gain a measure of what’s in store for us in the future. In the context of the Malay community, what has become of their mother tongue and their linguistic identity? What has become of them as a language community? The chapter discusses the changes to the language and to its speakers by focusing on two levels: internal or community level, i.e., in the way the Malay community fosters the development of its own language; and external or national level, i.e., in the way the larger national language policy impacts the language and its speakers. The internal level is represented by the issue of Sebutan Baku, and the external level the impact of English-medium education on the Malay language.
