Abstract
This paper examines the use of translanguaging as a pedagogical approach to support English language lessons at The Japanese School Singapore. It aims to describe the functions translanguaging pedagogical practices play in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom context and the motivations of the English language teacher for using them. The paper begins by tracing the history of and reasons for traditional, strict language separation policies, commonly applied in the EFL context, which mandate that the English language should be taught only in English. A literature review of translanguaging as a theory and its application to interpret pedagogical translanguaging in language learning and content mastery classrooms follow. Finally, how and why translanguaging is used in the teacher-participant’s English language classroom are described and analyzed. This paper provides an in-depth and close-up examination of pedagogical translanguaging practices by an English language teacher at The Japanese School Singapore, and argues for greater acceptance of translanguaging in schools.
