Abstract
Creativity is an extremely important component in modern-day education and the basic building block of a music curriculum. Infusing creativity in music teaching and learning is central to achieving the goals of music education.
Hoffer and Hoffer (1982) provide three reasons to explain why the goals of music education can be attained through the use of creativity in music teaching and learning. First of all, the value of creative effort in music is an invaluable and enriching one. Secondly, children tend to treasure what they have created personally, so creative ability can actually help to boost their confidence. Finally, creative effort helps in the learning of music.
Currently, music educators are more concerned with devising as many approaches as possible to teach creativity. However, it seems that there is a lack of emphasis on what is actually going on in the actual music classroom. This study looks at the magnitude of the teaching of creativity that is being infused into the music curriculum and examines how the approaches being used to teach creativity are linked to the theories of creativity. By understanding how creativity is being taught in the music curriculum, educators will be able to design music curriculum that enhance creativity more effectively.
