Abstract
This study attempts to find out how preschool educators perceive themselves as moral agent, the effectiveness of their role as a moral agent in relations to others (e.g. the parents, the children, fellow colleagues and the supervisor), and to obtain their opinion on an integrated curriculum on moral education to be incorporated in the training program for preschool educators.
A quantitative survey that consisted of 20 statements were conducted among 100 respondents. Ten informants were involved in qualitative interview and two observing informants were selected from the researcher's child care center for prolonged observation for a period of two years.
The results of the survey show that demographic characteristics of the preschool educators (e.g. preschool settings, age group of the children etc.) did affect their perception on their effectiveness as moral agent and in relations to others. In compare to preschool educators from playschool, preschool educators from child care center and kindergarten hold more positive view in these two aspects. But no significant difference was found in the aspect of an integrated curriculum in moral education among these the preschool educators from child care center, kindergarten and playschool. The results of the structured interview show that the informants interviewed are positive of being effective moral agent and being effective in relations to others (e.g. parents, children, colleagues, etc.). The observation carried out among two observing informants show inconsistency in the moral thought and moral action.
The findings are preliminary and further research into specific areas are recommended.
