Abstract
The relationship between Chinese poetry and Zen attracts the interests of many literary critics, both ancient and modem The underlying similarities between the philosophical thinking of Zen and the unique art of classical Chinese poetry are of great importance in the development of Chinese literature. From early Tang era, the integration of Zen thinking into poetry and poetics gradually became a common practice as more and more literati were interested in Zen.
The aim of this paper is to illustrate such relationship through a comparative study of the poems of Wang Wei 4% and Huang Tingjian. From their different ways of expressing Zen in poetry, we can find the change, not only of poetic style, but also of the style in Zen practice, from Tang to Song. As indicated by the historian Fu Lecheng, the cultures of Tang and Song represent very different esprit. This is proved by the poems of Wang and Huang.
