Abstract
With the introduction of the Gifted Education Programme in 1984, it has been discovered that many students in the Gifted Education Programme fail to do well in Chinese.
The study investigated the relationships between Chinese language achievement among gifted students and the following variables, viz. home background, parental influence, language exposure, attitude towards the language, peer influence and motivation.
It was found that language exposure had the strongest correlation with Chinese language achievement. Of the forms of language exposure, reading was more important than listening to radio programmes and watching TV programmes.
Home background and motivation were also strongly correlated with Chinese language achievement of gifted students. Although gifted girls performed better in Chinese than gifted boys, the relationships between (a) home background and Chinese Language achievement, (b) motivation and Chinese language achievement and (c) home background and motivation among gifted students were stronger for the boys than for the girls.
