Abstract
Research developments in the area of writing in the last ten years have led to a variety of approaches to the classrmm teaching of writing. In Australia teachers have been exposed in more recent years to a major debate between the 'process' and 'genrist' approaches to the teaching of writing. This paper outlines the features of the major approaches and then proposes an alternative 'middle ground' or 'integrated' approach to the teaching of writing.
