Abstract
Good study skills together with a positive attitude and motivation contribute to academic performance in students' studies. Increasingly, it is recognised that teachers should become more interested in helping students individually within the context of their own courses.
In tertiary institutions, it is the responsibility of students to plan, schedule, guide and monitor their own study. Although there is no one ideal method of studying, this present study investigates the impact of motivation and study skills of students on their academic performance.
The hypothesis to be tested is that students who achieve good academic performance are motivated and adopt appropriate study skills. Based on the study conducted, it is found that there exists a relationship between motivation and study skills of students and their academic performance. Students with better academic performance adopted good study skills and are motivated.
The implications for lecturers are that in addition to course contents, students should be taught examination techniques and study skills including the planning and scheduling of time for studies and revision.
