Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the effects of the use of a calculator on mathematics learning for pupils in the primary schools. The research used the modified 'split-and-switch" pre-test/post-test design. It involved 63 primary six pupils from two EM2 classes from a neighbourhood school. The pupils in one class formed the non-calculator group while the other class formed the calculator group. Both the non-calculator and calculator groups took a pre-test without the use of a calculator. The calculator group was given instruction on the use of calculator over a period of two weeks. After two weeks, the non-calculator group took the post-test without the use of calculator while the calculator group took the post-test with the calculator allowed. No significant difference was found on the mathematics achievement test scores in the calculator group. There were also no significant differences in their scores for test assessing basic skills and problem-solving skills.
