Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate an integrated psychosocial treatment programme – Facilitated REcovery Education (FREE). FREE is conceptualized based on the psychological and social models describing substance dependency. The research objectives were to evaluate FREE based on the three levels of Kirkpatrick’s model of evaluation: Level 1 (Reaction) - to evaluate reactions of participants to the FREE programme, Level 2 (Learning) - to evaluate knowledge and skills acquired in preventing relapses to substance dependency and Level 3 (Behaviour) - to evaluate changes in behaviour of participants after attending the programme. A within-subjects approach was employed in the research study, using self-report Feedback Forms completed by participants post-treatment (Level 1), Achievement Tests on participants’ knowledge and skills in preventing relapses to substance dependency (Level 2) and The Behaviour Change Scale (BCS) to assess participants’ behavior change post treatment (Level 3). Fifty-eight volunteers (N=58) diagnosed with substance dependency and meeting the pre-determined inclusion criteria, identified from two halfway houses in Singapore, completed the treatment programme. As was hypothesized, participants responded positively to the programme, while there was a significant increase in knowledge and skills acquired in preventing relapses to substance dependency by participants and there was a significant change in behavior post treatment as reported by the participants and clinicians working with the participants.
