Abstract
The article touches on the deminishing of Malay characteristics such as 'kampong' living, ethnic attire and the preference of the people to speak English with each other. This is due to the growth and development of Singapore from a fishing village to a cosmopolitan industrial city. The life of the Malay people has thus evolved from a 'closed society', which is more comfortable and relaxed to an 'open society' which is busy and constantly pressed for time. Living with other communities to preserve harmony and inter-racial marriages have changed the way of life and culture of the Malay people.
