Abstract
Singapore was part of Malaysia until the year 1963. On the 16th of September 1963, the day of the Federation of Malaysia, besides being an ally of Malaysia, Singapore also gained independence from British domination. Then on 9th of August 1965, Singapore was separated from the Malaysian coalition and earned the glorious status of being a country of its own. This island which operates through sovereignty and democratic system did not hinder the advancement and growth of Tamil literature. Tamil literature is going through a great deal of development ever since 19th century. Therefore, this thesis compares Singapore’s and Malaysia’s published Tamil literature component which is short story. In order to do this, elements found in the chosen short stories such as content, techniques, impact of the stories on readers and goals of both countries’ short story writers were analyzed and compared.
Writers from Malaysia and Singapore have produced their stories according to their distinctive context and backgrounds. This thesis also intends to classify the differences and similarities found in the writers’ written work in order to bring out the individuality in each writer’s creation.
Only the book forms of short stories written from 2000-2009 which has been published were used in the research and analysis. To be exact, 1259 short stories from Malaysia and 534 short stories from Singapore were taken into consideration in this research. Even though there are plenty of short stories being published via newspapers, magazines, articles and radio throughout Malaysia and Singapore during the research period, they were not included in this research to keep the research scope focused.
Compared to Singaporean short story writers, Malaysian short story writers are performing better is the researcher’s hypothesis. According to the findings, Malaysian short story writers are very much good in all the aspects of literature such as content, techniques, approach, structure and flow in the language.
In the process of exploring the short stories from Singapore and Malaysia, the researcher has exploited more analytical approach compared to descriptive approach. Besides, the researcher has utilized comparative approach in the area of uncovering the differences and similarities found in Singaporean and Malaysian writers’ short stories. The aspects compared were the themes, techniques and the usage of the language.
This research has six chapters. The first chapter which consists of objective of the study, hypothesis of the study, limitation of the study, approach to the study and finally the literature review of the study.
The second chapter of this research discusses about the Singaporean and Malaysian Tamil short stories’ birth, existence and historical development.
The themes found in Singaporean and Malaysian Short stories’ were analyzed in the third chapter of this study. This chapter explores the messages sent to the society through short stories. Messages that revolve around humanity, love, family, religious issues, racial issues, social issues, education, economic and political thinking were also examined in this chapter.
The fourth chapter discusses techniques used in Singaporean and Malaysian short stories. This chapter unravels and sorts out various types of techniques found in the short stories.
The impact of short stories on the Singaporean and Malaysian society is discussed in the fifth chapter. This chapter further investigates the impact short stories have on social, economic and political status.
The final chapter concludes the whole research. This chapter also reviews the findings and suggestions of this study. The Appendices attached comprise the tables, graphs, media articles, sample short stories, questionnaires and feedback to support the present research study.
