The relationship between Chinese language achievement and Chinese cultural knowledge of junior college students

Abstract
This study was designed to find out in the Singapore context, the relationship between Chinese language achievement and Chinese cultural knowledge of junior college students.
The term "Chinese cultural knowledge" in this study is taken as consisting of four parts: Literature knowledge, Historical knowledge, Moral knowledge and knowledge of Chinese Festivals and Customs. The sample of the study comprised of 140 students from four junior colleges.
The findings of the study generated implications that could cast light on the methods of enhancing students Chinese cultural knowledge. The findings suggested that students' Chinese culture knowledge can be improved by providing them with more opportunities to be exposed to Chinese language through teaching curriculum. Therefore, use of new Chinese language syllabus with more Chinese cultural knowledge and new teaching strategies like inclusion of interesting topics about the Chinese cultural knowledge will help to stimulate the interest of learning Chinese language. On the other hand, reading of Chinese articles, listening and watching Chinese media programmes and increase participation in Chinese festival celebrations will also help the students to improve their Chinese language and Chinese cultural knowledge.
