Abstract
Since the implementation of the Master Plans for Information Technology in Education in 1997, there has been an increase in emphasis on the use of technology to enhance student learning in Singapore schools. Middle managers like the head of department of information technology (HOD-IT) are tasked to lead the school staff in the use of technology to engage students in the learning process. Through the implementation of different technology projects, the HOD-IT promotes the use of technology in the classroom for teaching and learning. What type of leadership style(s) would the HOD-IT adopt during the IT project implementation?
An integrated leadership model framework was used for the design of this study. This framework comprises two leadership models that are frequently used in the education field: Instructional leadership and Transformational leadership. This framework provides the structure for data collection and data analysis.
A case study approach was used to examine the type of leadership style(s) adopted by a primary school HOD-IT during an IT project implementation over a period of eight months. Data collection comprised interviews with the HOD-IT and project stakeholders, observations of the HOD-IT and reviews of relevant documents such as the electronic diary, IT department work plan and email messages.
The findings of the study revealed that the HOD-IT adopted an integrated leadership style during an IT project implementation.
