Abstract
This study argues that students can be enabled to discuss the paintings that they see, with their peers, without relying on the Art Teacher for information about the paintings. The teaching and learning of quality Art Discussions is based on a socio-cultural approach, where learning is guided and co-constructed, together with others, in the classroom. Through effective modelling, an Art Teacher can condition and equip students to use language to effectively discuss the paintings that they see, independently. The five dialogic principles which are collective, reciprocal, cumulative, supportive and purposeful, as advocated by Alexander (2004), are applied and practised by participants in this study and results showed that students can engage in Art Discussions which is dialogic, dynamic and exploratory about the paintings that they see, when left on their own, without the continuous presence of the Art Teacher.
