Abstract
English Literature in Singapore has undergone several transformations since its introduction during colonial times. I examine the phenomena of English Literature, tracing the events that have promoted it as a viable subject of study in England to its current place within the education curriculum of Singapore in the form of 'Literature in English'. I maintain that although 'Literature in English' opens up the syllabus somewhat to include texts outside the canonical models, there is a persistent apathy towards our own Singaporean Literature. I establish links with the colonial past in an effort to discover the reasons for this apathy, in the hope that I can place the relevance of literary studies to Singapore, as a postcolonial society in search of an identity.
