Abstract
This study attempts to find out, among Singaporean teachers, their relationships between the personal background, family background and the social environment on the one hand, and the teachers' perception of family functions on the other.
The sample consists of 508 ethnic Chinese teachers aged 40 years and below. They came from 33 primary and secondary schools and four junior colleges. The researcher developed a questionnaire, the Teachers' Family Opinion Questionnaire, which was administered to the teachers. The three family functions included in the study are procreation, nurturance and socialisation.
The teachers' career-mindedness and highest qualification are significantly related to their perception of all the three family functions of procreation, nurturance and socialisation.
The first thought of marriage and family is significantly related to the family functions of procreation and socialisation, while marital status is significantly related to the functions of nurturance and socialisation.
Religion, the age of the first thought of marriage and family, and the language used at home are significantly to the family function of procreation; and age, to nurturance.
No significant relationship is found between the family background and the three family functions.
Among the social environment data, only the school social environment is significantly related to the family function of socialisation.
The findings are preliminary and further research into specific areas are recommended.
