Abstract
This study aimed to find alternative teaching strategies to actively involve special needs pupils in reading. A peer tutoring intervention was implemented to assess the reading achievement of 16 pupils who were diagnosed as having mild mental retardation. A pretest-posttest control group comparison design was used. The effects of the study were determined by collecting data on reading accuracy, rate of reading and comprehension. The results showed that both tutors and tutees made gains in reading achievement but tutors made greater gains.
