Abstract

This study aims to probe the possibility of a new training approach by enhancing reading comprehension through listening for the Chinese students in Singapore.
In the background of the globalization of Chinese language (CL), teaching CL as a second language faces not only opportunities but also new requirements and challenges. In Singapore, even though CL is claimed to be the Mother Tongue, it is actually a second language. The reform of CL teaching is needed due to the two main reasons as stated below: the generational shift in language use at home and the ever increasing amount of CL teachers whose first languages are English. Although the students in Singapore have an amount of advantage in listening and speaking CL, the little exposure to CL in the home and lesser connection between graphic, phonology and semantics of Chinese characters cause them fail to understand the information of the reading passages. Many researchers have proved the similarity and positive correlation between listening comprehension and reading comprehension. Hence, the approach of Reading through Listening can strengthen the connection between graphic, phonology and semantics of Chinese characters and it will help students to enhance reading comprehension. Further research directions are also suggested.
