Abstract
The purpose of this study is to document and explore the implementation of Cooperative Learning (CL) by an experienced teacher who had taken CL courses and conducted one of the CL strategies learned in a secondary school. It is important to document the implementation of new initiatives such as CL to understand the changes in the landscape of learning in Singapore. Only one case-study is explored as the other teachers approached were indisposed and / or unfamiliar with the Cooperative Learning strategies at the time of the study. A lengthy formal interview which was transcribed for content analysis was conducted by the researcher before the observation. Informal interviews were carried out after the class observations to clarify matters.
The factors that have influenced the strategies used were : the class, the rapport established between teacher and pupils, teacher's competency in the subject, the subject taught and duration of time for preparation. The findings highlighted the relationship between teacher's efficacy and the implementation of CL. Further research could examine the effectiveness of training and implementation of CL and comparisons can be made with other strategies or initiatives introduced by MOE.
