Abstract
The descriptive study describes how primary schools in Singapore are publishing information on their school web sites. Data was gathered from 177 primary school websites. A checklist was designed based on the literature reviewed. The school websites are classified into five categories: (1) non-existent (2) passive (3) active (4) interactive and (5) dynamic. The findings suggest that the school web sites of most Singapore schools are passive and they contain the basic information about the schools only. They are usually not interactive in nature. With regard to content design, schools web sites serve roles such as a data warehouse, a channel of communication with stakeholders, a window of accomplishments and a window for active and independent learning. However, they are lacking in using the interactive nature of the Internet to keep communication open with their stakeholders. School web sites are also not posting their notice of updates in their sites. In terms of interface design, many school web sites use features such as photos and animations to augment their interfaces. There seems to be a dire lack of the use of video in enhancing the web sites. Generally, most of the school web sites are visually well designed, with organized and consistent web pages throughout the site. The fonts used in most sites are also easily readable and navigation in the sites was generally easy. This study recommends that schools further develop their web sites in order to reach out to a greater audience.
