Abstract
The primary purpose of this research was to listen to the voices of the children on what play is to them in school. With the introduction of the SEED program in all Primary One and Two classes, play could be one strategy that can be used to engage children in learning. With that in mind, the teacher-researcher advocates play in her class. This also gave the teacher a chance to observe, participate and document the research with ease. With that, she was interested to find out what her children thought about play in school.<br><br>This qualitative study was conducted with two Primary One pupils from a primary school in Singapore. The children were observed during their recess and free play time. They were also asked to draw a time when they played in school. They were then interviewed on what they think play was in school. Their perception of play centered around toys and the importance of having time for play was key factor. Learning was mentioned to be the most enjoyable part of the day and recess was regarded to be boring as compared to other researches.<br><br>Differences between children's and teacher's view of play will determine the activities from work to play. The research can be taken a step forward by comparing teachers' against the children's perception of play.
