Abstract
The purpose of this research project is to investigate new bioactive compounds from the marine cyanobacterium, Lyngbya majuscula, collected from Pulau Hantu Besar, Singapore. From this micro-organism, an organic extract was obtained and it was separated using chromatographic methods, such as VLC and HPLC. Bioassay-guided fractionation on the organic extracts led to the purification of a new molecule designated as 120-C. Among the organic components obtained, this compound 120-C was observed to have bioactivity of 92% toxicity in the brine shrimp lethality test at 10 ppm. Subsequently, its planar structure was elucidated using MS and extensive NMR methods. Finally, the stereochemistry of a chiral carbon of the amine group was determined using Marfey's method.
