Abstract

This dissertation is a monographic study on Singapore Chinese novels from 1980 to 2000. Since 1980’s the theme of Singapore Chinese novels have been switching from patriotism to culture introspection. This dissertation focuses on city desire and presents its materialized and spiritual appearance in Singapore Chinese novels within the recent 20 years, reflecting not only how rapid urbanization impacted the citizens, how western culture shocked the traditional sense of Asian values, but also how Singapore Chinese novelists made efforts to adhere to humanistic ideals and rebuild the spiritual homeland.
The dissertation is comprised of nine chapters as following:
Chapter One comments on the Singapore Chinese novels in the recent 20 years, states the research purpose and scope, defines the concept of city desire and also summarizes its main features.
Chapter Two mainly discusses the first layer of city desire: survival. That is, how anxious the citizens are to improve their living conditions under the increasing survival pressure.
Chapter Three and Four describes the second layer of city desire: material and love. The relevant narration in Singapore Chinese novels shows how the desire for materials affects people’s attitude towards wealth and privilege and their concepts of love and marriage.
Chapter Five, Six and Seven present the third layer of city desire: identity, status, traditional culture and humanism. Singapore Chinese novels depict modern citizens’ feelings towards the transition of their identity and social status, their attitude towards the traditional cultures and the impact against humanism brought by their desires.
Chapter Eight discusses the main stream of Singapore Chinese novels: pursuit of ideal and happiness in life. The novels adopt the depiction mode like “desire/ideal” and reveal how modern citizens resist the temptation of desire and rebuild their ideal homeland.
As a conclusion of the whole dissertation, Chapter Nine summarizes the features of narrations about city desire in Singapore Chinese novels from 1980 to 2000.
