Abstract
This study proposes an approach for preparing a challenging twentieth-century work for the junior college symphonic bands. There is a need for this study as a survey of band repertoire of nine junior college symphonic bands from 1986 to 1996 reveals few performances of technically and musically challenging twentieth-century works. This situation may improve if conductors can include more challenging twentieth-century works for future performances. However, it is essential that conductors understand the processes involved so that they can prepare rehearsals and performances effectively.
My approach to the preparation processes constitutes four stages: score-selection process, score study, conducting preparation and rehearsal preparation. I have selected Jan Van der Roost's Spartacus based on four important considerations and they will be discussed in the score-selection process. Score study is the most important stage in the approach. A three-phase score study model has been proposed specifically for Spartacus so that conductors can acquire a thorough structural and detailed knowledge of the score through organised and systematic learning. Problems of conducting, interpreting and rehearsing the set work are identified through questionnaires by conductors and junior college band members. Conducting irregular metres are highlighted for discussion and conducting patterns for these metres will also be suggested. A pre-rehearsal plan will suggest useful guidelines and teaching procedures to anticipate problems of interpreting and rehearsing Spartacus before the actual rehearsal.
