Abstract
The popular Disneyfied understanding of the fairy tale film is that, it is almost always a recreation of patriarchal stereotypes about women. Recent fairy tale films feature a postfeminist heroine who is not the passive, weak, helpless or muted character found in literary versions by Perrault or Grimm. Instead, these heroines reflect postfeminist traits associated with “girl power” which give them agency, freedom and independence. Using textual evidence from recent fairy tale films like Snow White and the Huntsman(2012), Mirror Mirror(2012) and Red Riding Hood(2011), this thesis will investigate the ways in which the female characters in these films reflect postfeminist traits and the limitations of such a portrayal.
