Abstract
Methodism developed in the eighteenth century as a result of the worldwide Protestant Evangelical Movement. Methodist missionaries went to China, India and Southeast Asia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, developing distinctive systems of Methodist education in these places as part of their efforts to convert the colonial population. In Singapore, the development of Methodist education paralleled the development of the colonial educational system as a whole. The aim of thk Academic Exercise is to show that the rapid growth of Methodist schools in Singapore from 1886 to 1914 resulted from a combination of successful prose- by the .American Methodist Mission, as well as the ability of the Methodist school to meet the educational needs of the different communities. This period is chosen because changes in educational policy by the government after World War I led to modifications in the educational system in Singapore. The study explores three main areas, namely the characteristics of Methodist education as compared to secular and Catholic education, community support for Methodist rather than other types of education, and the relationship of Methodist education to proselytizing. Some limitations of the study are also discussed.
