Abstract
This study on “Multicultural Knowledge and Skills of a Sample of Singaporean Primary School Counsellors” was intended at conducting a qualitative investigation of multicultural competencies of a sample of Singaporean primary school counsellors. Five Singaporean primary school counsellors were identified with the help of the Guidance Branch of the Ministry of Education, Singapore. Data collected by structured in-depth interview with the five Singaporean primary school counsellors was thematically analysed. Thematic analyses yielded twelve themes, which were then grouped under four over-arching themes. The four over-arching themes with their sub-themes were as follows: (a) Embracing the Differences (Cultural immersion; Cultural sensitivity); (b) Multicultural Skills (Respect your client; Suspend judgment; Ask, don’t assume; Humanistic approach: Empathy); (c) Creative Solutions to Cultural Issues (Capitalize on similarities; Be flexible; Allow the use of indigenous healing methods); (d) Growth through providing Therapy (Being curious; Self knowledge; Be humble and open to learning). The practical implications of the findings might inform future decisions regarding training and recruitment of counsellors working in multicultural primary school setting.
