Abstract
This study is divided into two parts. The first part aims to examine some recent approaches to sound, allusion and structure. Chapter 2 looks at how Sound, defined as the vibrations produced by non-electronic, acoustic instruments or the human voice, is treated. Chapter 3 examines the ways in which Allusion, defined as indirect or passing references to extra musical sources, is reflected in the gestures and compositional decisions within the music. In acknowledging that in structuring music, composers tend to delay resolution and convergence, Chapter 4 aims to examine some of the ways in which recent composers subvert god-direction and resolution in the music. The premise of the study is that these recent approaches have been significantly influenced by two factors. One of which includes (1) the communal problem faced by twentieth century composers, of the need to create innovative ways of self expression and yet constantly held back by the burden of history (2) the fast shrinking world with the increasing awareness of the music of other cultures (3) the greater awareness of the richness of the potential of resources in our social, cultural and natural environments.
