Abstract
The central focus of this study is to explore , on the basis of comprehensive quantitative data gathered from one school environment, the extent to which school children's performance, motivation and expectations are affected by family background. It was found that the majority of students surveyed came from the lower socioeconomic group.
The findings of this study demonstrate that socioeconomic status is a vital factor influencing academic performance and seems to have a significant effect on children's ability to profit from educational facilities.
In addition, socioeconomic status also affects the student's self concept , measured in terms of his expectations and aspirations.
