Abstract:

The transcript on culture and society was produced by Radio Singapore. Human culture is created by humans' desire to invent, feel and their will to create something to improve their lives to suit their surrounding and time. Human life is everchanging; from the primitive to the modern period. Different environment and the era will cause the situations in a society to be different from the culture of other societies. Such influences affect and change culture such as in the economic system. For instance, different jobs in industrialised nations when compared to jobs in villages and in the cities; jobs in Singapore before and after independence. Previous generations observe 'custom' to discipline and control the society from being influenced by external elements. However, the current generation has rejected many customs that are no longer relevant with the present environment and time. The future generation is an integrated society that is built from elements which are of common interests. If integration occurs due to assimilation (absorbing new ideas into existing ideas), then it is good news, but if it happens due to acculturation (the new ideas delete existing ones) the new integration culture would be beneficial to some but might be a loss to others. Changes that occured based on accultaration or assimilation have happened and are happenning in the arts, language and literature, education and teaching, and so forth. The speaker cites the Senior State Minister for the Ministry of Education who stated that it is the current leadership's desire for culture, traditions, values and attitudes of our Eastern culture be preserved as we learn the Western technology to achieve a higher standard of material culture. In the development of culture, language plays an important role.
