Abstract:

Transcript on "Modernisation and westernisation", delivered via Radio 2, SBC (Singapore Broadcasting Corporation). Mr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad opines that modernity is mostly brought over from the West and the word 'modern' is a culmination of Westernised thinking and values. Something modern is something new, which uses science and technology such as engine driven machines to replace manual plows, use of calculators to count and other devices such as in transportation, education, industry and so on. However, not all that comes from the West are reasonable for us to ape. For instance, westernised behaviours that are not in accordance with our moral values. As Muslims, we live according to the values of our culture and Islam. Behaviours which contradict with the culture and values of Islam should be avoided, such as the intermingling of non-'mahram' men and women, handshakes between them, among others. There are many other western behaviors that have been copied and assimilated into our daily life. However, we must be wise in choosing those which are reasonable and reject those which are damaging or contrary to the values of Islam. Islam does not reject modernity, but it rejects westernisation that is propagated by those who have started or have become irreligious. It is up to the individuals to select that which is suitable, reasonable, and beneficial.
