Abstract:

This transcript was delivered in a program Sari Bahasa broadcasted by SBC, W94.2 and is about the word 'tadika/tabika'. The word 'tadika' is an acronym for the phrase 'Taman Didikan Kanak-kanak'. In Indonesia, pre-schools such as 'tadika' used to be called 'Taman Siswa' but now are called 'Taman Kanak-kanak' or using the acronym TK. In Malaysia, the 'tadika' is called 'tabika', which is the acronym for the phrase 'Taman Bimbingan Kanak-kanak'. In Singapore, children who have not entered the formal school are educated in 'tadika' and the concept of 'pendidikan' or education, became the inspiration to name 'Taman Didikan Kanak-kanak' with the acronym 'tadika'. Whereas in Malaysia, some people consider the school's function as 'membimbing' which means guiding and have not reached the level of 'mendidik'. Therefore, the word 'bimbingan' is applied in the naming of 'Taman Bimbingan Kanak-kanak' with the acronym of 'tabika'. The purpose and the age of the children in the schools are the same, but only in name are they different: in Singapore it is called 'tadika', in Malaysia it is called 'tabika'.
