Abstract
Traditionally, the research done on the Regulated Verse (近体诗) of the Tang Dynasty mainly focused on its literary aspects. Very few researchers actually focused on the grammatical aspects of the literary form. Some may even deem such research as unnecessary.
However, one can never deny the fact that a reader will be able to understand the original meaning of the poems better, once he is equipped with knowledge of its grammar. Research on the grammar of the Tang Regulated Verse can also serve as a reference for the research of other linguistic aspects of the Chinese Language.
Bearing in mind its importance, I propose to do a detailed study on the grammar of the literary form. Wang Li and Jiang Shaoyu are pioneers of such research. This thesis aims to discuss the grammatical characteristics identified by Wang and Jiang and go on to further identify other characteristics that were not stated in their research.
I propose to do a "Step Analysis of the Sentence Constituents" on every sentence in the 152 Regulated Verse chosen by Mu Zhai in his book "The Reviews and Translations of Selected Tang Poems" (唐诗评译) . Through this grammatical analysis, I aim to identify the grammatical characteristics of the literary form.
I also compare my findings with those of Wang and Jiang, to see if the grammatical characteristics identify by them are commonly found in the poems. I will also rectify any misunderstood concepts stated by Wang and Jiang in their research, with reference to my findings.
My findings are presented in four separate chapters. In chapter two, I look into the Transmutation of the syntactical functions of a word. In chapter three, different types of sentence ( including composite sentence, contracted form, determinative sentence, pivotal sentence, etc.) that can be found in the Tang Regulated Verse, are being studied.
In chapters four and five, the phenomenon of Omission and Inversion, which are common in the Tang Regulated Verse, are discussed. In the last chapter, I present a summary of my findings and conclude with a discussion of the importance and value of such a research.
