Abstract
In this Academic Exercise (A.E.), I intend to explore the role of individuality presented in the totalitarian societies of Brave New W-, The Trial. Metamorphosis and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Due to industrialisation and urbanisation, significant portions of the world's population currently reside in well-ordered, efficiently run cities. I believe these works by Aldous Huxley, Franz Kafka and George Orwell highlight the dangers of living numbed, unconscious and orderly lives. I explore, in this A.E., the different means of control used by governing bodies to suppress the oblivious public. Most people are unaware of the existence of these structures, much less the impact they have on the Self. The individuals who show an awareness of this manipulation, are dealt with accordingly. Modem society is projected as an "urban paradise" but I hope to prove that this "paradise" has a totalitarian source. These societies may have been built upon a utopian intent, but the ideal has been perverted. To live in these societies, Man has to forsake truth, justice and freedom.
