Abstract
Malaysian Chinese have a choice of opting to study in either the government secondary school (国中) ( "Government Students" 国中生) or the Chinese independent school (独中) ("Independent Students" 独中生).
In order to investigate the possible differences between these two types of Chinese secondary school graduates in respect of their views on language and identity, a questionnaire survey was conducted. 60 Chinese secondary school graduates in Johor Bahru took part in this survey.
The results from the survey show that the identification of the Government and Independent Students with the concepts of nation and Chinese community are consistent. However, Government and Independent Students exhibit a significant divergence in relation to their identification with their dialect community. The findings of the survey reveal the trends of a gradual replacement of Hokkien with Chinese as a low language.
The thesis will be presented in six chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the hypothesis and method of the research. Chapter 2 provides, as background knowledge, information in relation to the sociolinguistic status and education system of Malaysia. Chapter 3 attempts to sketch the concept of sociolinguistic and Anderson "imagined community" model to establish a foundation for the hypothesis. Chapter 4 illustrates the organization of the questionnaire and gives details on the procedure of the survey. Chapter 5 begins an intensive discussion on the findings of the survey to verify the previous hypothesis. The last chapter serves to conclude all the discussion and findings in previous chapters to generate an overall viewpoint on the hypothesis.
