Abstract
Graphene is the wonder material. Simply an atomic layer of carbon atoms, graphene, with its exceptional charge carrier mobility at the nanoscale is the ideal candidate for various next-generation applications such as flexible electronics, gate controlled spintronics devices, supercapacitors, novel sensors, super batteries and other graphenebased optoelectronics. While its remarkable properties and massive application potentials have attracted much investment into graphene research and developments the industrial commercialization of graphene has remained elusive primarily because of high production cost and more importantly, the lack of a reliable large-scale production technique for high-quality graphene synthesis.
The goal of this project is thus to investigate the key growth factors and the optimal operating conditions required for Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and the PlasmaEnhanced CVD (PECVD) synthesis of high-quality graphene.
This dissertation is divided into four parts. The first part touches on the science, discovery, potential applications of graphene and the main methods of graphene synthesis. The second part describes the experimental apparatus and instrument designs for investigating the synthesis of high-quality graphene by both the CVD and PECVD techniques. It also covers two key characterisation techniques, specifically, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy that are crucial for determining the quality of the graphene synthesised by the CVD/PECVD processes. The third part presents and discusses the graphene characterisation results and the dissertation will conclude with the lessons learnt from the project and possible areas for future investigation.
