Abstract
An excellent public transport system has been seen as a key component to achieve a world-class transport system. In the recent decade, Singapore has been expanding and developing its own transport service and infrastructure to improve accessibility within the island and within the individual residential towns to cater to the needs of Singapore's rapidly growing population. The introduction of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) to supplement the current Mass Rail Transit system in the country symbolizes a new era in the transportation history of Singapore. Given the importance of the transport network in Singapore, it would be of interest to observe how the LRT can help to improve the accessibility of an area and what are the possible effects it will have on the region.
This study seeks to examine the public transport network in Sengkang New Town and analyse the impacts of the new LRT system on the retail potential sales of the three major shopping centers in the town. A spatial interaction model integrating socio-economic data from a field survey and accessibility analysis data was used to evaluate the changes in retail potential sales. From the modeling results, it is reflected that despite a slight improvement in the accessibility of the shopping centers in the town by LRT, only the retail potential sales of one shopping center increased.
