Known as the master of Singapore drama and a national treasure, Kuo Pao Kun had created a rich and multi-cultural "Expressionist" drama. Under his constant innovation and continuous practice, his theatre, regardless of the theme, narrative vision, and complex meaning construction actively reflected the Singapore's local context. He was able to converge and reshape the dramatic cultural ideas between Eastern and Western successfully. His profound works not only influenced the Singaporean literary world tremendously, but also bridged the cultural behaviours between Asian and the world.

This paper intends to adopt a literary interpretation approach to analyse the development of Kuo Pao Kun’s Chinese drama works from 1984 to 1989.It also hopes to clarify how Kuo’s works has highlighted the stylistic features of "Expressionist" drama and the artistic techniques and linguistics presented in those works. I also intend to examine the impact and limitations of such works in the context of contemporary Singapore, as well as to objectively evaluate Kuo Pao Kun’s "Expressionist" drama works.

Meanwhile, it is hoped that this paper will be used as a reference for Chinese literature and drama teaching in the junior colleges of Singapore.en
