Abstract
SUG 15-16 JL sought to investigate the history of Singapore English through creating a diachronic corpus of early Singaporean texts (i.e. spanning the colonial era). The resaerch questions were:
1. How far back in the history of Singapore English can current Singaporeanisms be traced? For example, the Malay word kopi is very common in contemporary Singapore English, but when did it enter the language? 2. Are there loanwords from local languages that have not been recorded or treated by current lexicographic and linguistic descriptions of Singaporean English? If so, what are these, and how many might there be? 3. What are the linguistic characteristics of these lexical items (Singaporeanisms), especially with regards to such features as orthography, frequency, and longevity?
