Abstract
Film music has since its inception been regarded as functioning as background music. It is indeed unfortunate that despite many academic attempts to elevate the status of film music, majority of the mass audience are still unaware how their cinematic enjoyment is partly enhanced by music. To understand how film music enhances the visual scene, one must understand how film music can integrate with cinematography to leave that lasting impression on us.
This paper will, thus, explore how film music integrates with cinematic techniques to create meaningful scenes for the audience. The films chosen for analysis are THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY, directed by Peter Jackson and HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Howard Shore and John Williams composed the film music respectively.
Taking it one step further, this paper will study the contrasts in the collaborations between the two pairs of directors to who use different means to produce various meaningful scenes. It is hoped that through this study, one will be able to appreciate the functions of film music and how it contributes to the wholesome experience of film viewing.
