Abstract
Reading acquisition research is conducted in many various disciplines as wide as education, psychology, linguistics and cognitive neuroscience and is consequently guided by the various theories, lines of research and implemented in accordance with their corresponding traditions. This paper will look at Chinese reading acquisition, specifically the processes of word recognition among adult native Chinese readers, by examining studies conducted in the various disciplines using different methodologies. Overall, 9 out of the 17 studies surveyed point to orthographic processing as the predominant route taken. While studies adopting the ERP methodology mostly converge on their finding – that orthography precedes phonology, results for both eye-tracking and fMRI studies are varied.
