Abstract
The objective of this action research was to find the effect that word processor has on primary two pupils’ writing and attitudes towards Chinese essay.
Two experiments were done in one week. Pupils were asked to write one essay by paper-and-pencil and another by computer. The computer-assisted writing software is Microsoft word processor. Eight primary two pupils participated in this qualitative study. They were divided into three groups according to writing ability. They are high attainment group, average attainment group and low attainment group. Each group will have their essays written by paper-and-pencil and by computer be compared on two areas: content and language.
Two interviews – before and after experiments, were done with each pupil to collect his/her perceptions about paper-and-pencil and computer-assisted writing. Pupils were also asked to fill in an attitude-test questionnaire towards Chinese essay written by paper-and-pencil at the beginning of the study. The same questionnaire was used to test pupils’ attitudes towards Chinese essay written by computer at the end of the experiment. Both questionnaires’ results were compared in order to find computer’s effect on pupils attitudes change. Field notes were also taken to collect information on pupils’ behaviors during writing.
The study answers two research questions:
1. Computer-assisted writing did improve the essay quality of average attainment group and low attainment group, but had little effect on the essay performance of high attainment group.
2. Computer- assisted writing helped to improve average attainment group’s attitude towards Chinese essay; the attitude of low attainment group also improved in certain areas; but the high attainment group’s attitude remained no change.
The research also found that master of hanyu pinyin was important because it decided pupils’ perception on their essay quality and attitude towards computer-assisted writing. Thus, it is suggested to include the hanyu pinyin tying practice in lower primary Chinese curriculum so that pupils can be prepared with the right computer operation skills when they start writing Chinese essay by computers.
