Abstract
Throughout the history of Chinese literature, critics have observed that many literary texts, though vary in types and styles, have been found to have incorporated similar storylines, settings, and characters. As a consequence, curiosity arises as to how exactly these texts inter-linked and interacted with each other, and furthermore, whether there were any evolutionary traits presented, i.e., whether there were any influences between texts. If there were, what were they, and how did they arise? All of these questions form the foundation of the research on the evolution of the story Feng chen san xia, which is one of the most famous romantic stories in Tang Chuan Qi.
From the view of reception theory, there is always interplay between literary texts and their readers, who never stop reading, re-reading, interpreting, and restructuring the texts. The readers, who are adapters as well, develop their own arguments during the re-composition and re-writing of the story of Feng chen san xia.
This study has employed the reception theory and the literary hermeneutics as the theoretical foundation to analyze and explain the evolution and the interactions of the series of Feng chen san xia story. Attention has also been focused on the literary texts, with regard to their transformation, differentiation, and proliferation. As a conclusion, the evolutionary process of the story Feng chen san xia can be understood as a process of merging all the components of writing, dissemination, reception, interpretation, and re-writing.
